Why are personal websites so boring in 2023?

A few days ago I was thinking about how websites have changed over the last decades and how personal websites are built today.

A personal website usually has a simple home page with a short description, a portfolio page and links to social networks such as LinkedIn, Medium, X, etc.

Why aren’t people using their own blog instead of using Medium, or just having a photo section on their website instead of using Instagram, etc, etc?

Are we getting lazy and less creative or are we just not willing to reinvent the wheel and take advantage of these “tools”?

Of course, there are some pros and cons to using these social media such as if it is free you are the product and they are selling your data or maybe you can be removed for not following the rules.

There are a lot of people that have stopped using Medium to start blogging on their own websites, but what about other platforms like YouTube, X, Instagram, etc?

Can we escape from them? Don’t get me wrong I deleted Facebook years ago and not regrets, but when we think about other platforms like YouTube it feels that we lose more than we can win by not using it (If you do it right).

What about Medium? The benefits of using Medium could be the positioning in search engines and also the recommendation algorithm, so you will probably have more traffic than starting your own blog.

And also, you could make some extra cash.

Being out of social media at the beginning we feel like we are missing something and when we come back again we realize that is still the same. The same people trying to show you how happy and material things they have. Social media is no longer interacting with your friends.

Social media is more for business than for interacting with friends. You could be the creator or the consumer, it’s up to you.

But doesn’t matter if you are a creator or not, you are still selling your personal data to keep the thing up.

I didn’t come up with the right answer for this question but I think we all should think about it.

How billionaires are trying to own these socials to influence you and make money with you.

And the thing is, you can have your own place that looks and has exactly what you want.

Maybe we should all build our own custom website for everything.
